Jonatan Catalán
Jonatan Catalán was born in Valencia. He was passionate since childhood with animation and photography. And with the premiere of Toy Story was the final push to get into the world of 3D and animation.
When he was 18 years old he started with his first works in infoarchitecture, where he soon realized that lighting was his thing. By combining these works with personal projects he was able to upload his first portfolio to the internet and try his luck beyond the world of architecture.
This adventure led him to work as a freelance for a few years, and later he ended up setting up his own animation studio with 2 partners. So Nation Keytoon Animation Studio. There he was responsible for the direction of lighting and textures, as well as the modeling of scenarios and props. He worked with clients such as Disney, Wildbrain, Mattel or Paramount Pictures and created characters such as Dr. Maxwell with his short film “The Grandfather of Soul” who was a finalist of the Siggraph in 2007.
Then came the most ambitious project so far, “Alma”, director Rodrigo Blaas, nominated for best animated short in the Goya 2010. After 3 months of production, Alma’s project comes out of the studio. And Jonatan leaves Keytoon well, after 3 years, starting a new stage as a Freelance.
This stage has led him to work with clients such as DreamWorks Animation Studio. Or Guillermo del Toro with the Trollhunters show, which was the winner of 7 Emmys. Jonatan got 2 nominations in the “Outstanding Main Title and Graphic Design” category in 2016 and 2017.
He has participated in other projects such as the Angry Birds movie, by Sony Animation Studio. The new Guillermo del Toro series, 3Below for Netflix. And the movie Grand Piano, starring Elijah Wood.
He has also worked for other clients such as Hasbro, ReelFX, Adidas, MTV, Instagram, Bankia or Bimbo.
